Reflux

I know I haven't been blogging lately. It's definitely been time consuming to be Momma so, I am sure you all understand why I haven't posted.

Most recently, the little one was diagnosed with reflux. It explains the excessive spit up and the tummy problems in general. I tried everything suggested to help him but, in the end I had to put him on Zantac. I wasn't happy about it. I don't like the idea of putting a 7 week old newborn on medicine. However, seeing him in pain was heart breaking for me. He would scream and cry and I would just sit there and cry with him because I felt so helpless. The medicine seems to be working. He still spits up but, it isn't as much and the pain seems to have subsided. He still screams when I try to burp him...I guess he just is conditioned to the pain from it.

I guess the worry of being Momma has kept me busy. I understand why my mom was always worried about me when I was growing up. It just becomes part of who you are as a mother.

I cannot believe that we are already entering November. That means Jonas is nearly 2 months old! It seems like it has gone by so fast in retrospect but so slow in the present. As I sit here handing out candy to the children in the neighborhood, I can't help but think, "Wow, next year we'll be taking Jonas out!" and that notion blows my mind. My neighbors came by with their 14 month old daughter and I know that will be Jonas next year.

We didn't really dress Jonas up, per se. He has a monster onesie and matching hat so that was his "costume". Originally, I wanted to buy him a bunting costume that was a ketchup packet. Frankly, I found it hilarious. But, my husband didn't see the point in spending $30 with shipping for something no one will see (other than in pictures). I realized after a quick pouting session (I really thought the ketchup packet was awesome), that he was perhaps right and we should save the big gun costume for next year. And in all honesty, he looked pretty darn cute as a monster. Not to mention, because I happen to dress him everyday, he'll wear that onesie past Halloween because I think its darn cute.

The Road To Recovery...

When I was pregnant, I received a lot of flack for working out strenuously 4 days a week. I took spin classes, practices vinyasa yoga, weight lifted and ran through my 6th month and only dropped running and spin class (which I replaced with 35 minutes on the recumbent bike) after the 6th month. I continued until 2 weeks before I gave birth and I have to say that I lot of people weren't too fond of my decision to do so. I often got lectured on it but, I continued anyways. After all, my doctor said it was fine to do so. I had no issues during my pregnancy...not even so much as elevated BP.

And I am lucky I did exercise because my recovery has been amazing. At 1 week postpartum, I was back down to weighing only 6 lbs more than my pre-pregnancy weight and today at 4 weeks, I weigh 2 lbs less than my pre-pregnancy weight...with no exercise. Yes, much of it has to do with being on the go a lot and eating while doing so but, I find it amazing that I have made it to this point.

Nothing can describe how incredible you feel having a child. Everyone kept telling me that but I didn't know what they meant. How could I? In fact, the thought of a baby scared me endlessly. I have no younger siblings, my younger cousins lived far away growing up and none of my close friends have children for me to ever have experienced anything with a baby. So, when Jonas arrived, I was scared to say the least. I spent the first week and a half with 'baby blues' wondering if I was hurting him, doing the wrong things, meeting his needs, etc, etc. I tried to nurse - failed miserably. I pumped - hated it (but still continue it). I generally felt completely lost. Until today.

This morning I woke up feeling good - 'baby blues' were subsiding and my mother in law was treating me to a massage (she had offered me a prenatal one my entire pregnancy but, I never felt comfortable going in for one). The massage was great. I drove home feeling so comfy and relaxed. However, when I got home, my mother in law told me that Jonas was being overly fussy (odd because he has so far been a very calm baby...sleeping well at night and having defined awake periods during the day). The fussiness got worse. He refused to be put down and would cry whenever his pacifier was out of his mouth. He wouldn't fall asleep no matter what we did. Scared, I called the doctor and suggested I bring him in tomorrow, fearing colic.

Now I am no baby-expert but, I am well aware that colic is not good. I have met people who have had colicky babies and it always seems like hell. I immediately googled colic looking for some sign that if it were the case, something could be done. One suggestion was to do the 5 S's which I had learned about in birth class. We tried, it didn't work but, we didn't have a swing. I rushed quickly out the door to Babies R Us to buy one. I never understood how my parents and my husbands parents would be willing to drop any amount of money on something to help us until my defining moment in the swing aisle at Babies R Us. I didn't care how much it was, I wanted the best plug-in swing with vibration, music and white noise with a 6 speed setting. As long as it made my little dude happy, it could have been $500 and I would have gotten it (luckily, and to the relief of my husband, it was only $105 with my coupon).

However, some time during my insane whirlwind trip to Babies R Us, my little guy did something amazing. He farted twice and pooped. I know this sounds really dumb but, I have never been so relieved to hear that farting and pooping allowed him to smile, take his 5pm bottle and fall fast asleep, no pacifier needed. I got home and broke down and realized in that moment how much I really, truly love my son. I didn't care what i had to do as long as he was OK. I know to many-a moms out there, this seems like common sense and and over reaction to probably a mild case of constipation and gas but, I don't care because I have never been so scared in my life.

For some reason, he is mesmerized by the black and white ring.

Due to late night pumping sessions, I have been spending a lot of time on the Style.com ap from my iPhone and yesterday, I fell in love with the Prada Spring 2012 show....the dresses are just AMAZING. If only I could afford something so chic! Now I am on the look out for similar fabrics and colors in the stores (which of course right now, most of my shopping will be done online).

Why I cook from scratch

I was cooking dinner yesterday which included the above (heirloom potatoes, a purple onion I got from the farmers market, zucchini in garlic olive oil and tarragon) and I realized that people often ask me why I cook with fresh veggies and meat. To be honest, I really don't know how to cook anything else. I own a crockpot but, I have no idea how to use it. I am lost in the frozen food aisle at the grocery store and really, to me it is easier to cook from scratch. This is especially true with a crockpot. Ok, so it is ready when you get home from work but, you still have to prepare the ingredients, right? And something about a machine that slowly cooks raw stuff over the span of like 9 hours frankly scares me. (Maybe it was all those classes I took to get my sanitation certification).

I think I also have to blame my upbringing. I don't really remember any of the women in my family ever cooking any other way. Definitely not my French grandmother and maybe my mom only on special occasions (we would ask for chicken nuggets or something for our birthdays). But mostly I grew up eating meals made from fresh ingredients. So, I guess I can't see it any other way. I know people think this will change when Baby Owl is born but, I don't see how. I just think it is easier to cook that way that I do!

Reuniting

Last night was my 10 year high school reunion. Wow. 10 years! I feel bad because I didn't take a single picture nor was I in any pictures with anyone there but, I had a great time. The great thing about it is was that it was my husband's reunion too. We actually graduated together in the same year but, because our class was so large, we didn't know each other. Yes, I knew of him but, we weren't friends or anything. It was nice to go and see people we both knew in a time in our lives that was so distinctly different (he was in hockey and tech prep, I was in choir and honors....way different sides of world at our school).

So, I thought it would be sort of cool to share this dorky little questionnaire I found on a website about how you change (or not change) in 10 years!

Latest Obsession

Because I can actually partake in fall fashion (I had to essentially ignore spring and summer), I have been extra excited about buying clothing. Though most of my clothing comes from thrift stores and resale shops, I do buy some things new. Especially when I feel that they are unique.

On my facebook, I follow Wanelo which likes to post pretty things to my wall everyday. Normally, I try my best to ignore all the unique products that pop up but, this time, I just couldn't. I just HAD to purchase a pair of tattoo socks from Post on Etsy. I personally bought the first ones but, they are all so beautiful, I may have to go back and get some more!

9 Months

I can not believe that I am posting about being 36 weeks pregnant already. It seems like this pregnancy has just flown by in retrospect. I only have 4 weeks until my due date and I feel 50% completely prepared and 50% completely unprepared. I have never really been good with the unknown so I think that is where the unpreparedness feelings come from. This last month has been so hectic with the fire, attempting to train backups for my job at work and the reality of it all; having a baby, a son, someone who depends completely on me and my husband to raise him. I know in the back of my mind I'll be a good mother but, I can't help feeling panicked about some things. I suppose all moms go through that.

The most exciting thing aside from knowing Little Owl will be here is the realization that I will be able to fit into normal, non-maternity clothing soon! I am so obsessed with reading about the Fall's fashion because I had to essentially ignore Spring and Summer.

Unimaginable Week

It has to be one of the worst weeks I have ever dealt with in my life. On Tuesday night, I got a call around midnight from our local fire department saying that my parents' house had been struck by lightening and was on fire. My husband and I rushed to their house (which is across town) to find the entire second floor engulfed in flames. It took 8 towns of fire trucks and 2 and half hours to put out the fire. Luckily, they were out of town on vacation in Colorado and their 10 year old Persian cat, Willow, was saved by a neighbor. However, they lost almost everything and because they had driven to CO, I was off two days from work to deal with the insurance companies, the media (whom I have learned can be completely rude), and getting a few salvageable items out of the house.

It was so incredibly scary to see the fire and deal with the aftermath. My parents have been doing well dealing with it but, I know we have lost so much including many family photos, our baby books and baptismal outfits and childhood toys. Though my brother and I are both married and live in our own houses, knowing some of this is lost is heart ache. Especially as I am about to have my son. It really makes you think about what is important in life....

I can't even begin to believe that there are only 6 weeks until my due date. Ok, I can believe it but, it just seems to have gone by so fast. Today I spent a good amount of time washing...well, everything. As a side note, I HATE laundry. Usually the hubby does it because he can't stand to have laundry sitting around so, once there is a full load ready, he is gearing up the washing machine. However, this is not the case with baby clothing, sheets, sock, etc. He isn't exactly sure why we need to wash everything before the baby wears it but, I know you have to. So, I spend the day doing just that.

But, I did get a chance to take a break and paint my nails. For anyone who has been pregnant, you understand that things like painting your nails is one of the only things you have A: control over and B: make you feel pretty while pregnant. Since all things fashion (eg. shopping, scouring fashion websites and blog, etc) seem pointless when you have a 40 inch waistline, the best you can do is focus on beauty. Today, I painted my nails with the IT color of the fall, Chanel's Peridot nail lacquer. Normally, I would never consider spending $24 on a bottle of nail polish but, it IS Chanel and it is an amazing color.

Hiccups

For some reason today the baby had hiccups at least 5 different times. Usually he has them for maybe a few minutes and they are pretty subtle but, today was completely different. Since he is head-down already, they were also uncomfortable. I will let you guess why. :)

My mom got me this dress at the boutique where I had my 3D images of the baby done. I actually love this dress and sort of wish it wasn't a maternity dress so I could wear it after the baby is born. Luckily it isn't really trendy so I can keep it and use it one day when we move on to another little owl.

Being Baby Busy

I know, I know, my blogging has suffered lately. However, with all the baby stuff going on, including our baby shower and getting the nursery ready, I have just lacked time to edit photos and post. I am sure anyone who has expected a baby completely understands. Right now, I am 33 weeks and on cruise control until I hit full term and start seeing my doctor every week. My mother delivered both my older brother and I 10 days early so, I am prepping for doing the same...even if I don't, better safe than sorry. So I have been spending an exorbitant amount of time washing bedding, clothing and diapers, figuring out how in God's name things work (like folding up my stroller to fit in my car, holy geez) and most time-consuming, training someone to do my job for my maternity leave at work. Which, I must say, has proven more difficult than I originally thought. Regardless, I wanted to share a few pictures of the nursery!

This is the room. Ignore the random pile of baby stuff in the corner and what looks like a demonic cat coming out from behind the bed (I promise, she is completely harmless!)

Baby Owl's crib. I love, LOVE this crib because it is simple, modern and there is a built in drawer on the bottom that is perfect for stashing extra linens. The paintings were done by a friend of ours who recently moved to Shanghai with his wife. They are both slightly abstract takes on places in Chicago (which will forever be out home even though we now technically live in the suburbs). The one on the left is of Grant Park and the one on the right is of the Botanic Garden coy ponds.

The crib head-on....and YES, those are Ugly Dolls. I chose stuff that doesn't really scream "BOY!" so I could reuse the bedding for Baby Owl #2 sometime in the distance future. To make it somewhat boy, I just added boyish accessories. Like Ugly Dolls.

He already has a large collection of stuffed animals, as you you can see....

I am a huge, huge fan of children's books (probably because my mother was a children's librarian when I was growing up) so I started him a collection of books and stuffed animals to go with the books.

And just in case you were wondering, here was me at our baby shower. We have a large amount of men on both sides of our family so, we held it at a brewery in the city called Haymarket Brewery. A friend of ours co-owns it. They brew their own beer and instead of baby shower favors (that no one ever takes home yet you spend too much money on), we paid for the beer. It was a great day and we had an amazing time with family especially family from out of town. We planned it the same weekend as my brother's wedding so everyone would be in to celebrate with us.

Opening some books....including French versions of my favorites like Madeline and Le Petit Prince.

My aunt knitted me a blanket which I loved. That would be my husband next to me as well as my mother (in the black shirt) and my mother-in-law all the way to the right.

Me with my cousin Claire. She lives in Boston so I don't get to see her that often. She is 9 years younger than me but a foot taller than me (I am the shortest person in my entire extended family and I am 5'6). Claire knits beautifully and owns an Etsy shop called Tumble Tower.

Looking Forward to Fall

Ok, so I LOVE being pregnant. I love feeling Jonas kick around in my belly and I love knowing that just 2 months from now, he will likely be here in my arms for me to hold and cuddle. But, I do NOT love maternity fashion. Mainly because it is all I can wear and I know that trying to buy lots of maternity clothing that IS trendy is just pointless. I have been pretty good about only buying basics and things that I can wear in the weeks after I give birth during recovery ....but, being the fashion slave that I am, I am so tortured by all the cute clothing in the stores. I have actually been avoiding shopping and various websites I normally frequent like style.com. Its just too hard!

Luckily, I have been able to look forward to fall. I know that I likely will not fit quickly back into my size 4 jeans so buying any fall stuff yet is probably pointless. However, considering I have only gained 19 lbs with less than 9 weeks until my due date (really, I am all belly), and I still am keeping active, I am keeping my head high that I will be able to get back to my pre-pregnancy size quickly! Here's hoping!

Ok, so I haven't forgotten about my blog. The problem is that I honestly had zero outfits to show! It seemed that within a week I was all of a sudden too big for 99% of my clothes. I had to resort to buying maternity clothing. I know that isn't the end of the world or anything....I mean, I astound myself that I have managed to make it to 30 weeks with minimal amounts of maternity clothes. But, I just couldn't squeeze myself into my jeans anymore - with the help of a rubberband on the button or not!

But, I am happy so far with how I have grown as a pregnant woman. Despite eating everything in sight (even in the first trimeste - I had no morning sickness), I have only gained 18 pounds at 30 weeks. From the front, I barely look pregnant....

I feel like giving myself a pat on the back! I can't say that I have done nothing to accomplish this so far. I crave mostly fruit and veggies and I still manage to work out 3 or 4 days a week. Which, I have to say, is really hard but, it makes me feel amazing to do so!

Ok, so I am by no means in any way, shape or form a professional or even a good photographer. However, I am definitely cheap. Not cheap in the sense that I buy cheap things but, cheap in the sense that I don't see the need to spend a lot of money on a maternity photo shoot when really all I want are a few stationary, strategically shot photos of myself with my belly. After debating on whether or not it would be possible for me to simply shoot them myself and edit them with my very slim amounts of Photoshop skills, I came up with this as a lighting/self-judging-of-ability test and I actually like it!

Oh, and of course, we have hit the 7 month mark! Only 12 more weeks to go....

The Today Show bothers me

Today I was working from home while being sick (yes, that is sort of an oxymoron but, I have to save my sick days for maternity leave so, hence working from home) and I caught The Today Show. Now, I have no idea who the women on the who are but, there is something about them that really annoyed me. I guess one of them is Kathie Lee but, she looks so different from what I remembered years ago that I didn't even know it was her. Anyways, they were talking about some survey that was taken about what men and women look for in a mate and I couldn't help but roll my eyes throughout the whole conversation. One point made was about how women like men who are chivalrous; as in opening doors all the time, lifting everything, walking on the side of the street that is closest to the curb. I am not saying that some level of chivalry isn't appreciated but, I could help thinking that some girls (including this one) actually get irritated by this behavior. Does anyone else feel this way?

Jewelry to Calm My Soul

After I loaded these pictures onto my computer I stared at them long and hard and finally realized it...I have gotten to that chubby stage. However, I do consider this epiphany to be pretty late in the land of pregnancy since I am already almost 7 months pregnant and have unbelievably only gained 15 pounds. It is pretty daunting to see the scale rise and your normally very thin physique change to such a degree, so fast. You start to play the idea in your head that, gasp, you will never get back into your pre-pregnancy jeans and remain as so for the rest of your life....

To generally calm myself from thinking such things, I started back up with a hobby I haven't visited since I was a teenager: making jewelry! I used to make jewelry all the time when I lacked any sort of real income beyond my parents' allowance. It was one of the only ways I could get close to what I saw on celebrities (like Gwen Stefani, my teenage and well, still biggest girl crush next to Zooey Deschanel).

I bought this dress for my nephew's Christening but, it is really the most comfortable dress ever. I never owned a maxi dress before I was pregnant. I felt they always made me look....well, pregnant! So, I guess I have an excuse to wear them now!

I also love the print on this dress. Far too often, I find maxi dresses that are either very floral or plain. But this one really caught my eye. I am such a fan of prints like this and the colors (although contain pink, which i normally don't go for) are great.

I have something to admit. I am completely incapable of driving in heels. So, I actually have a pair of driving shoes in my car. But yesterday I went with my trusty Toms. I have a feeling that the further along I get with baby, the more pairs of Toms a may need! I am completely in love with this dress. Miu Miu Necklace

The other day, I saw this Miu Miu necklace on the French Vogue website and I fell in love with it. Of course, I couldn't contemplate spending over $400 on a necklace so I decided to make one that was similar.

Ok, so it isn't the exact same but, I actually like mine more. I received a lot of compliments on it and I was even asked if I sell any jewelry by one of the nurses at my OB's office! Who knows, maybe I will start an etsy shop.

Have you ever had one of those days at work where you think to yourself, "I would rather live in a box than deal with today again."? Today was one of those days for me. It was just so challenging and it made the concept of being a stay-at-home mom so favorable in my mind. I just really wish sometimes that was an option but, in my head, I know it isn't. I did manage to make it through the day but, by the time I got home today (which was pretty late), I was all about just ordering food rather than making it. I know this isn't the best option for being pregnant. I really try to eat healthy but, days like today just make me want a pizza and watch my recorded episode of 'Pregnant In Heels' (AKA my new favorite show).

Two shirts and a visit to the hospital

I have to preface the title to this post with an, "I and baby are OK. Don't worry". However, I did have a scare last week which is why I haven't gotten around to posting lately. Late last Wednesday, I was experiencing some crazy pains in my belly and tightening that I couldn't describe. It didn't hurt or anything but, it was tiring me out and I had them on and off for a few hours. It was enough to scare me into calling my doctor the next morning. Thinking she would simply to tell me to drink some water and take it easy, I was pretty nonchalant on the phone about it with the nurse. 30 minutes later, the nurse called me back and told me to go to the hospital! I nearly freaked out! I drove myself to the hospital where my mother met me and had to be hooked up to a monitor to make sure I wasn't really having contractions. Turns out it was simply dehydration and was causing some nasty Braxton-Hicks and I am baby owl are fine. It did scare me into taking it easy and slowing down.

Moving on, about my outfit....the skirt is actually, well, a shirt. Its one of those babydoll tube tops and I found it for super cheap at Forever 21. But it works really well as a skirt because I can fold down the 'tube' part however I want. Great for my 6 months picture, no?

Late Derby

So I am so late in posting this but, I have a genuinely perfect reason for being the worst blogger this past week....my sister-in-law gave birth to my nephew! I have never been an aunt before so, I am overly excited (Really, I am. I think I scared her with my excitement).

So, I reiterate, I am super late on this post. This was what I wore the Friday before the KY Derby for Derby Day at work. As part of Derby Day, we were encouraged to wear a derby hat. I was so excited for this that the day they sent the communication to our office, I went to Hobby Lobby at lunch picked up supplies! I used to make a lot of hats in my drama kid years since costuming was generally the actors' responsibility. Most people would rent costumes but, I usually made mine and hats were my thing.

My Brother's Wedding

Today was a good day! My brother's fiance called me and asked me to stand up in their wedding this July! I am really very excited and so happy for my brother. He doesn't live here and sometimes I wish I could find him a new job so he could move back. I have never visited him in Boise, ID and it ill be hard to know that he won't see much of the baby due to the distance. That leave so many more options than finding a maternity dress from one of the typical wedding wear places.

This was actually my Wednesday outfit but, I recreated for today so I could take pictures. I think this is the last time I will be able to wear this dress until after Baby Chouette is born. It is definitely starting to get a BIT snug in the belly region! However, it is one of my favorite dresses so, I will miss it until probably October rolls around. It reminds me of a multi-coloured honeycomb!

Now am I am sure many of you watched the royal wedding today or at least caught some highlights on the web. I have to say that I fall into the latter category. Something about waking up at 2am to begin a Wills and Kate Wedding marathon doesn't really spark my interest. However, I do have to say that checking to see what her gown looked like first thing after waking up was on my list of to-dos. Frankly, I loved her dress. it was elegant, classy and, as the British would say, "Spot on" in my opinion.

Even though I was not completely immersing myself in the hype of the wedding, I can't say the same for some of my co-workers. Many of them woke up early to watch beginning coverage, decorated their cubes in British flags and even some wore big, fancy hats. However, I was mostly impressed with one of our inventory analysts who actually baked William's Grooms cake. And, it may be because I am pregnant but, it was one of the most amazing cakes I have had in recent years! I managed to track down the recipe and plan to make it soon. See the link below to get it!

Prince William's Groom's Cake via SprinkleBakes

Chocolate Biscuit Cake

Lightly adapted recipe from Eating Royally by Darren McGrady

1/2 tsp. softened butter for greasing pan

8 oz. McVities rich tea biscuits, broken into pieces

1/2 stick (4 tbsp) unsalted butter, softened

1/2 cup extra find granulated sugar

4 oz. (about 1/2 cup) chopped chocolate or chocolate chips
1 egg, beaten

8 oz. chocolate for icing

Cinnamon for dusting

Lightly grease a 6" spring form pan. Set aside. Cream the butter and sugar in a bowl until mixture has lightened in color.

Melt 4 oz. chocolate in a double boiler. Add butter and sugar mixture to the chocolate stirring constantly. Add the egg and continue to stir. Fold in biscuit pieces until they are all coated with the chocolate mixture.

Spoon the chocolate coated biscuits into the cake pan. Press firm with the back of a spoon to fill in any gaps - the bottom of the cake will be the top when turned out. Chill the cake in the refrigerator for 3 hours.

Remove cake and unmold on a wire rack. Melt the 8 oz of chocolate (I did this in the microwave) and pour over the cake. Spread smooth with an off-set spatula. Allow chocolate coated cake to sit at room temperature until chocolate is set. When set, run a spatula under the cake to remove from wire rack (chocolate makes it stick a little). Transfer to a fancy serving platter, slice and serve.

Since we are doing the floor renovations in the room that I typically take my outfit photos, I had to find an alternative this afternoon when I got home from Easter dinner with my family. This is our dining room which of course, currently has only plywood for floors. It isn't so bad but, the lighting we have in this room is a little yellow. I didn't feel up to trying to change setting on he camera to make it more natural of a light.

I am sure that anyone who has kids has felt the way that I feel now....completely frustrating is naming the baby! It is by far the hardest thing I have ever done especially since my favorite boy's name is not exactly my husband's favorite. We just can't really agree on a name right now. My family was trying to convince me that I should wait until he is born before I name him but, I am far too Type A for that. I am sort of hoping for some sort of miraculous intervention of God to bring the right name to me but, I am thinking it won't happen!

Why no one is coming over for Easter....

The posts have been sparse the last few days because we have been ripping out our incredibly ugly Berber carpet in order to replace it with oak flooring. I made this decision the second we bought the house 2 years ago. I told my husband, "I will not have a child crawling around on 1990s Berber, dirty carpet." Luckily, he remembered and agreed that hardwood flooring was the best best. We both missed having it from when we lived in the city! So, I thought I would share a little peak at some of the action!

Today someone called me 'edgy'. I found it actually quite funny because I really feel that I am the least edgiest person ever. I think it was this outfit....possibly the shoes? I am not sure, to be honest. It's funny how sometimes you see yourself so differently from other people and how other people can see you in so many different ways.

This dress is my building dress. It was originally on Modcloth but, they were sold out and I found it for $30 less on Karmaloop. I was so excited to get it a couple months ago only to be disappointed that it was pretty flowy. This apparently works awesome now belted with the bump so, I can't complain!

I have been so inspired lately but fellow bloggers and some co-workers who have fashionably been sporting some tea length skirts in pretty spring hues. I thought all was lost in finding one when I found this pastel pink bad boy at the Goodwill near my work. It was a size bigger than what I normally wear but, that worked out with the bump. So I paired it with a simple black tee and my trusty black pumps.

It was so chilly here that I had to take out the winter coat again. It was extremely windy and only about 45 degrees out! Brrr! Where did spring go?

Even when I have the most awful days, I always here Dave singing this line in my head and somehow it makes me feel better. Dave Matthews Band is probably one of my favorite bands. Today was one of those days where it seemed like the entire world was running at fast forward! I was so busy at work that it seemed just when I was getting started, it was 4:45pm. On a good note, I got to finally wear my Seychelles Gypsy heels I bought over the winter. I fell in love with this shoes because of the blog Second Skin. She always wears her pair and I just love them. Oddly, they are incredibly comfy despite the higher heel.

Today was also the first time a stranger stopped me to ask me when I due and to say congratulations. It was definitely weird to have someone random ask that but, at the same time, exciting to know I actually look pregnant to outsiders. At least pregnant enough for people to KNOW I am pregnant and not just having a Twinkie phase.

Spanish Influence

As a pregnant woman, I belong to a list of forums for moms-to-be. Its a natural decision because I really don't know anything about being a mom so, it is nice to log into a site and see that other people fear and love the same things you do about being pregnant. One of the things I saw on one of the sites was to spend 10 minutes a day with your baby...however it is that you can interpret that. My way is to dance in the morning with my belly. I know that seems really corny but, music is a huge part of my life and I want my child to hopefully love music the in the same way.

This morning I hit shuffle and The Gipsy Kings came on. I have this secret liking for Spanish guitar music and I am not really sure where it originated. I have a few mexican style dresses but, considering the gloomy, rainy 45 degree weather this morning, I chose this dress which is sort of my next closest option.

Today we received a call that our crib was delivered! I was so excited. Of all the nursery furniture we have acquired, this is the only piece that is both pricey and something we bought new. All of the other furniture is hand-me-downs or things I have bought on consignment. We were afraid to buy a crib that was old due to all of the safety concerns with drop-sides and bar spacing. So, we decided that finding one we liked, despite the price, would be an investment not only for the safety of our baby but, to use for future babies as well.

The Cold Bug is Never Good....

This is especially true when you are expecting. I have never felt so horrible nor appreciated Tylenol Cold and Flu so much as I did over the last 4 days. It started with a cough, innocent enough. The cough cleared but, was then followed but a sore throat, congestion, head ache and running nose. Not to mention, I couldn't hear out of one ear! The worst part was, the most horrible of the 4 days happened to have been the day of my sister in law's baby shower. I had to leave early...

So this is the only picture I managed to fester up before falling promptly into bed to sleep for 5 hours in the middle of the day. I absolutely love this coat. It's by Free People and I actually picked it up at a thrift store by my house about 3 years ago. It had never been used and still had tags on it!

It was actually sunny here! I am not kidding! The meant I could bare my knees. I know this sounds like a very small accomplishment in the realm of weather but, honestly, it was a huge deal.

This outfit is actually from Thursday. I have had a killer cold the last few days and it has kept me under. Being sick when pregnant is possibly the most horrible thing ever. Your body basically works to protect baby and leaves you out to dry. Normally colds for me last a day and I bare through it with some Tylenol Cold and Sinus. Unfortunately, you can't take meds when you are pregnant so, instead, I have spent the last 3 days in agony. However, in the end you have to just tell yourself, "I am having a baby and that is worth every second of pregnancy even if some of that time is spent in sickness hell..."

I bought this dress on Etsy when I found out I was pregnant. At the time, I thought the empire waist would sort of hide my belly when I started to show. Wow, was I wrong. This dress completely makes me look pregnant. I am OK with that now since everyone knows my good news. I wore this work hoping to somehow bring on Spring. It didn't work. It was still about 48 degrees outside and cloudy. So, I had to wear my boots with it.

It's funny how some days I feel gigantic with the belly and have to resort to looser fitting clothing and then other days, my regular clothing works just fine for me. Tuesday was a gigantor day. I opted for this cute little sheer navy dress that I got off Modcloth. It is a great piece for the way my body is working right now because it has an empire wast and it a dark color so I don't look super big in it. I had to wear a cardigan though, because it was cold but, the sleeves on this dress are adorable. they are all lacey and girly which works out really great right now because I feel so girly all the time (hormones!).

This outfit was actually form yesterday but, I didn't get a chance to post it last night because it was both Music Mondays on my blog and it was also my husband's birthday. We went to the local pub and had $4 burgers. It was a good time to sit and talk, which we don't get to do sometimes on week nights because as an architect in the city, he works pretty long hours.

I got this little lace knit tunic at the local resale shop called Spree. For whatever reason, I have amazing luck there. A lot of the thrift and resale shops around here can be pretty sketchy and a lot of the times, finding something good is a matter or either good timing or consistent checking back. But it seems every time I go to Spree, I end up coming home with a whole bag of finds. Not to mention, I donate there and when you donate, they give you a coupon for the store for $3 off your purchase. Not bad when most of the items (including this tunic) are under $5. It also was cute to wear because it showed off the obvious preggo bump I am not sporting!

Modcloth Maternity?

I am not going to lie I love Modcloth. And when it came to the moment that I needed to buy some looser fitting clothing, it was the first place I looked. Most of my clothing is from resale and second hand shops but, when I do buy new clothing, 80% of the time it is from Modcloth. Whether it is something I buy myself or something put on a birthday/Christmas list. My mom actually got me this top after she asked me if I needed any flowy clothing since my belly was getting bigger and I love it. The color and floral is great and if will grow with me until I am fairly large with baby!

Then, I got to thinking. Modcloth should have a maternity section. It would be this Momma-to-be's dream site. But, to be honest, they do have a lot of clothing that could be used as maternity wear, which I like. There are a lot of women like me out there who love fashion and vintage-style clothing that get into a fashion rut when they are pregnant. Most maternity clothing is horrid...really not good. Modcloth Maternity would be the best solution!

And Modcloth, if you need an advocate blogger for maternity wear or clothing that you carry that could be maternity wear, I am your girl!

Today I woke up to snow on the ground. Yes, SNOW! I am never a fan of snow in March because in my opinion March equates to Spring and Spring doesn't not (or at least should not) encompass snow. So, on went the warm tights. I was going to wear a gray dress to fit my mood after realizing how cold it was outside but, I decided to wear my new dress from Modcloth. I bought this for my sister-in-law's baby shower that is coming up in early April but, I felt it was just the right amount of bright color to enhance my crabby morning mood.

The details on this dress amaze me. I think there are like 4 different types of lace and the little buttons up the front are adorable. I paired them with my ever-so-pretty heeled oxfords. These shoes are actually comfy despite not looking like it. And of course, I do not look even remotely pregnant in this dress!

Tragically, I ended up changing out of my new oxfords. It was just too cold and rainy out to go the day wearing small shows and leggings. So I opted for my brown boots instead. But, I love these new shoes. they aren't vintage. I picked them up at DSW with a giftcard I had received for Christmas and never used. I actually managed to pick up 4 pairs of shoes with a $100 giftcard. I guess my thriftiness doesn't just enter the actual thrift stores. I never could understand spending so much many on shoes. I always end up ruining them in the end which doesn't bother me if they cost $25 and last a year.

And don't be fooled by this outfit and think, "Lara, where's the baby bump?". The bump is still there but, easily hidden by a belt and strategically placed pleats due to said belt. Although, I don't have to hide my pregnancy at work anymore (almost everyone knows), I still feel like I just look chubby as opposed to pregnant. I am just at the in between point. I am sure in a few more weeks, the bump will make me look more pregnant than as if I just ate 100 twinkies.

Green for Spring

I am sure I am not the only one out there that is just impatiently awaiting Spring. Especially if you live up north like I do. Spring is my favorite season...Ok, technically it is equally considered my favorite along with Autumn. I am just a fan of mild weather and seeing all the flowers and plants reemerge as living.

Needless to say, my impatience has found its way into my wardrobe. I have been recently wearing a lot of brighter colors which, to be honest, it extremely hard given baby! Most of my clothing from last spring is fairly fitted and I am now in that in between stage of being too small for maternity clothing and too large for my normal size 4s. So I have opted for basically forgetting to belt (and for anyone who knows me, I love to belt pretty much anything).

The Bell Jar

Recently, I was home by myself because the husband was working late due to a project deadline for his firm and I found myself aimlessly channel surfing. I do this a lot. (I think it has something to do with growing up around so many men!) Anyways, I fell upon the movie Sylvia starring Gwyneth Paltrow. It was basically about the life of Sylvia Plath, the famed American poet and writer that committed suicide in 1963. I can't say I know much about Sylvia Plath despite getting into modern and beat poetry when I was in college but, the movie intrigued me about her life and work. I immediately purchased a few of her published works online (Amazon loves me and my spontaneous purchasing) including the only book Plath wrote called The Bell Jar. Published just one month before she committed suicide and somewhat auto-biographical, the story is written about a young woman from Boston and her struggle with mental illness. I definitely find it interesting though slightly depressing and the way it is written is realistic with good flow. I am sort of amazed that I haven't explored Plath's works until now but, I am glad my channel surfing paid off!

I am generally a believer in milestones in a person's life. When I look back at my life, I can think of many distinct turning points that changed the course of my life. Whether it was choosing to go to college in Chicago, changing my major from biochemistry to business, or meeting my husband and moving out of the city to have a life with him. But now, we have a hit another milestone...the decision to have a baby! We aren't pregnant yet or anything but, as a result, I am changing the direction of my blog to encompass other subjects that are not fashion related. I think they will still follow the same mindset that will interest you all but, they will involve other subjects in my life!

Ok, so that is how I explained my outfit to one of my coworkers today. My friend gave me this great purple 1980s skirt recently and because it is so bright, I have been struggling to style it. Then I realized, basic is best and black is basic so, there you go. I was actually amazed at how many compliments I got about this skirt today despite the fact that it is bright lavender. I guess it will enter into my clothing rotation afterall!

I am actually really excited because my husband and I had a First Anniversary photo session yesterday. We actually got the pictures back today (our token photographer friend is pretty quick) and I excited about sharing them....I just didn't have time to post them today. So hopefully tomorrow! I am proud to say that most of my outfit for the photos was thrifted and it was gorgeous!

So the fact that it have been in the 80s all week has somewhat depressed me. I really want to break out the tights and boots, but I just can't!

I got this dress at a new thrift store near my house called Spree which, is apparently part of the Unique thrift store company. If you are from the Chicagoland area and you thrift, you inevitably know of Unique. The dress was fairly cheap, only $4. And it is honestly brand new from like 1988. I am convinced no one ever wore it. I also picked up a brand new (with tags) Cynthia Steffe military style suit jacket. I wish I would have taken some pictures to show but, I didn't get around to it. So hopefully tomorrow!

The Week In Review

Lately, I feel like a chicken with my head cut off! I have been so busy that the last few weeks have just flown by. Sometimes I like when that happens but, not when I am so busy that I forget what day it is.

On a good note, I have been experimenting with all the clothes my friend Andrea gave me a few weeks ago when she left me for Seattle (I am still slightly bitter).

I really like these two pieces alone but, I am not so sure about them together. I think they tend to look a bit 80s when worn together. The sweater was one that Andrea gave me. It is really soft and comfy and it actually IS from the 80s so maybe that is where my feelings on the outfit stem...

Mercy - Pure and Simple...

The past week I have been watching my parents' house as they are on vacation. In doing do, I fall across a lyric book I used to have and in the front cover was the lyric, "Mercy - Pure and Simple" which is actually a line from the song Mercy by Sarah McLachlan. I had always wanted to sing it when I was in high school as a trio but the sheet music never existed and I never found the time to arrange it and transpose it onto my own sheet music.

I was supposed to water my mom's flowers as part of my house sitting but it was so nice out yesterday that I decided to prop my camera up on the grill to take a few outfit pictures. I got this dress is a big bag of clothes the my friend Andrea (is the post below) gave me before she moved to Seattle. Its such a comfy dress and it is the perfect length.

It is also the perfect dress for me to wear my necklace from Tree and Kimball. I absolutely LOVE her jewelry and I have another necklace in my sight. They are just so unique. I always get compliments when I wear this one.

Ok, so I know that I have been really absent lately but, in my defense, work has just been crazy! Luckily, I have been able to have some fun.

Recently, I have been in love with the color green. I bought this dress from Urban Outfitters on the online clearance section. I really love it although, I am sad that it is slightly too short for work. So, I guess it will just be a going out dress. I am tempted to try out some tight/legging combinations with it for fall.

I wore my green dress out for a night with my dear friend Andrea who moved to Seattle this week. It's so hard when a friend moves away. We were fairly close in high school and then right after graduation but she went to school in a different state so it was hard. When she moved back a few years ago, we only hung out sporadically. It has only been recently that we got close again. So I am sad she moved so far away.

I just wanted to pop on to share the most wonderful news of my new couch! A family friend of ours had this couch and she was looking at sell it. Apparently, they are redoing their front room and this did not match their new decor. So, I immediately jumped at the opportunity to acquire this wonderful 1960's mod sectional! I am just in love with it. There is actually a 4th piece, which is a stand alone chair, that we couldn't fit in the cars when we picked the sectional up. (Ahem. And that would be our kitty, Madeline, whose purpose in life is to be in all my pictures)

Our lawyer (whose office is down the hall from my cube at work) called me a hipster because of my hat. He and I have a lot of conversations on jazz because we both feel rather passionate about it. He loves the likes of Miles Davis; I fancy the vocal greats like Etta James. But jazz love is jazz love and it is rare to find other individual who feels the same way even if you differ in tastes.

I bought this skirt for a good price on Etsy a while back but this is the first time I am wearing it. It is a BIT too tight on me by about an inch so I have to wake up knowing that if I am going to wear it, I have to be feeling that it is a "skinny day". I love it so much though. It's a vintage Pendleton wool plaid skirt with pockets. despite the wool, it is actually a pretty light fabric and is perfect for summer. I could not believe how many compliments I got on it.

I was so excited to wear my new vest today. I fell in love with it while randomly browsing Etsy last week and I received it in the mail on Saturday. It's a little heavy and warm for summer as it is a vintage Pendleton wool vest but, I was so convinced to wear it that I didn't care. Luckily, it was freezing in our office today so it sort of saved me.

I am totally excited for a new venture....a new blog! I am considering it an off-shoot of this blog. These days I thrift so much for clothing and accessories but, I realized I never talk about my thrifting and budget shopping on my home decor. My husband and I moved into our home just over a year ago and we didn't do much in the realm of decoration due to his job layoff just one month after we bought our home.

Ok, it is Bastille Day but, I didn't wear red, white and blue in honor of my French heritage....instead, I wore my new dress from Anthropologie! My mom was nice enough to buy it for me after I fell in love with it on a recent Mom/Daughter shopping day over the weekend for my mom's birthday. I wore it today because my grandmother would have loved this dress so it was a little bit in honor of her. She had a huge love for southwestern anything. We used to take vacations with her and my grandfather in the summers to various southwestern states. I even wore the turquoise Navajo jewelry I inherited from her.

The best part about the dress is the beaded detail on the waist. I really love that it is so colorful and can be wore easily summer-winter.

I also got my haircut last week. Everyone they like my fringe (which I normally cut myself) but I feel like he thinned it out a bit too much. I go to a guy in Chinatown in Chicago and he speaks very little english. Sometimes I think when I say "Just a little off the bangs..." he thinks I mean "Cut them how you want them!".

You will have to ignore my horrible skin in the above picture too. I have been trying not to wear any makeup because I have been breaking out a lot. I tried a new foundation and it totally made my skin freak out. I can't grasp why I had great skin as a teenager but then, when I hit 23, it got horrible all of a sudden. 4 years later, it is still not good. All my skincare people at work claim your skin changes drastically every 7 years. I am not sure how much of a reality this is but, I guess they would know better than me.

My 4th of July was extra exciting this year. Not only was it a great sunny day and I got to see family but my best friend got engaged! Her and her (now) fiance were visiting his parents in Seattle, WA for an extended weekend and he popped the question! I am so excited for her.

I don't really own that much red, white and blue clothing so instead I went with more of a Native American theme. I am not sure why I couldn't find a red, white and blue outfit that worked considering I have so much clothing but, everything I put on just looked stupid. So, I went with this little ensemble. This is my first post since I had my wisdom teeth removed last Friday. Oddly, Tieka from Selective Potential had hers done the same day. I wrote her immediately to share horror stories but, hers was much worse! So everyone should send their love to her! Luckily, my experience was not as traumatic as Tieka's. Still painful nonetheless and the swelling has finally gone down enough for me to be OK with taking post photos.

I am starting to get embarassed at the horrible fuzziness my camera creates. I am convinced that I threw off the lens when we took our honeymoon in California. I dropped my backpack while hiking through Yosemite and I heard a big 'clunk' as my camera bag was on the bottom. I would go get it fixed but, I think at this point it isn't worth it. I may as well just replace it. I keep telling my husband that as soon as he gets a permanent job, I am buying one! I am not sure which one yet but, I am really happy with my dad's Pentax. Any suggestions on an SLR camera would help!

I haven't been around much and I feel really bad about it. Unfortunately, the midwest has been hit by some crazy storms lately and I usually hate to be on the computer when it is severe outside. Not to mention, yesterday I had my wisdom teeth removed. Luckily, I am not in a lot of pain. I do look like a chipmunk though! My cheeks are swollen so I have been spending a lot of time with ice on my face.

However, last weekend, I had a great day passing through some garage sales and thrifting downtown with my good friend Andrea. I managed to buy two leather vintage purses, a belt, a hat pin and three dresses! We went to an amazing vintage stores in Chicago named Seek. I feel bad that I haven't posted in so long! Life has just been so busy. We have been dealing with a leak in our roof and it doesn't help that there has been a crazy amount of rain lately. Luckily, none of the water in making it into our house. It is simply ruining one of our eaves. I also have been really busy at work trying to pursue an open position in another department and the normal business craziness! Lastly, I have become addicted to the gym. That title is very optimistic but I specifically chose it because it is opposite of what I am feeling. I know I have mentioned my husband is an unemployed architect....well, he hasn't been grated extended unemployment so that means we have to pay for our mortgage each month out of our savings. Luckily, we have been really good savers over the last few years but, nothing is more frustrating and ego-hurting than having to see your money be eaten away.

But, I have been optimistic mainly because I have to be. I think that is why I have been wearing bright colors lately. They make me happy!

Busy Bees and Bad Blogging

I have to admit that I have been a pretty bad blogger lately! I used to update almost everyday and now you are lucky to get two posts out of me in a week! However, in my defense, I have been extremely busy! Between weddings, housework, working out, learning to use a sewing machine and various summer parties, my schedule has been stacked full. By the time I get home, I am just too exhausted to post anything.

I did want to share my Saturday outfit with you though. I am mostly excited about the blouse I am wearing because I scored it for a whole $1 at the local thrift store. I went to go drop off some packages at the post office (which is conveniently next door) and I thought, "I have 10 mins to stop in!" Best 10 minutes ever spent! I managed to get this blouse, another similar one but with sleeves, a sparrow hat pin and a gorgeous yellow Pendleton summer sweater!

I also managed to bake something on Sunday afternoon. It isn't a hard recipe (and it can't be because I seriously lack baking skills). Its a recipe that has been in my family for a long time and it is basically just called Meme's Apricot Cake. Meme would be my French grandmother. And I have modified it a bit by using cinnamon in the batter (which my grandmother would have had a heart attack over as she claimed the French do not use cinnamon...) and I used peaches in this one instead of apricots. (I apologize I dont have a picture of it cooked!)

Meme's Apricot Cake

Ingrediants:

1 can of apricots or peaches in syrup

1/2 cup of sugar

1 tsp baking powder

1 tsp cinnamon

1 cup of sifted flour

1 cup of milk

1/2 stick of softened salted butter

Preheat oven to 350 degrees. In a spring form pan or regular round baking pan (12 in is OK), spread butter within the entire inside (it doesn't have to be neat or spread evenly...just as long is there is a bit everywhere). In a bowl, combine flour, sugar, baking powder, and cinnamon; wisk milk into mixture creating a batter. When batter is smooth, pour in the buttered pan and spread to make even - DO NOT mix it with the butter...simply make it evenly distributed on the bottom. Drain can of apricots (or peaches) and lay them into the batter. (NOTE: if you are using apricots, make sure the round side of the halves are facing up). Place pan on top rack of the oven and cook for no more the 45 minutes.

And Voila!

I had an outfit post planned but, I had an unfortunate incident with a face lotion that apparently contained an ingredient I am allergic to because it made the skin all around my eyes burn. I am talking like having sunburn on the skin all around your eyes. It is painful and has me in hot flashes! Hot crazy is that. Needless to say, I didn't get around to taking pictures of anything...

But I did want to post so I just wanted to share something I have recently fallen in love with...

Why why why does Modcloth have to post this top when I am on a buying strike?? I just can't deal with it! We all know my obsession with owls....

Ok, so I am a little bummed. I apologize ahead of time for my pessimism. Its just... my husband was working a contract job with my company. We ate lunch together everyday, drove in together everyday and had fun talking the same corporate language for 4 months. And now his contract it up........and he is once again unemployed. Now, I am not ungrateful. Far from, to be honest. I am extremely humbled by the generosity and opportunity people from my company have given our little family. We were able to save a lot of money that would not have had. We got to share a lot of time together at the beginning of our marriage. And he created some great friends and links within his career network. For that, I am ecstatic about. I just wish he didn't end. I pray now he can find another job in our horrid economy....

Ok, ok. Enough of my woes. Onto fashion. On a GOOD note, this amps up my thrifting need. Maybe also some care package swap opportunities if anyone is interested! I am always up for a good swap. I plan on hitting the thrift stores tomorrow afternoon. My husband will be spending the day studying for yet another (there are 7 of them) architecture exams. I usually leave the house and go to my mom's or shop when he studies so I do not bother him. He only has a few left and finishing them to become licensed can open up some opportunities in the job market.

This outfit is something I threw on last minute yesterday. I actually hopped on my blog and clicked around in the morning because I just could not figure out what to wear. Luckily, I got some inspiration from Amanda at Off Of Broadway. I love her style and ability to use thrifted and vintage pieces to create her style.

I received this dress from Meaghan at left hand endeavor about a month ago but, I felt it was just too chilly out to wear it yet. But somehow despite the chilly cloudy weather yesterday I just felt it was time to wear it for the first time to work. I thought for sure that I would get some weird looks for wearing a very bright floral pastel 80's day dress but, instead I received quite a lot of compliments one of which was from my boss. I dressed it up for the work day with some tall brown heels I own but, I am actually really excited to wear it with my brand new Toms for a more casual look.

I am really excited to have another Giveaway. I honestly find it fun to pick a winner and pack up the item all pretty to send out. Plus, I know I love to receive packages especially if they are because I won something or organized a care package swap. So, while searching for a good giveaway, I ran across this skirt in my closet. I picked it up at a thrift store in Chicago when I lived there and was poor. Its actually a Merona skirt from Target but I was lucky enough to score it when Target donated it. I actually used to work for Target and if you didn't know, Target doesn't throw out or merchandise return its clothing. If it never sells as clearance, it is donated to local thirft stores and clothing drives to help the community.

The skirt is a size 4 US. Its pretty true to that size. I never wore it and when I bought it, it still had tags. It has pretty tan/brown buttons and I feel it is actually pretty well made for being from a Big Box store.

I know that this title has nothing to do with fashion or even blogging but, I really need to go on a diet and I need help. I have always been fairly small...until about 2 years ago where somehow I managed to gain about 15 pounds. I still do not consider myself fat but, chubby maybe? Have any of you gone a diet and it was successful? I want to do this the right way but I don't know where to start!

I love spring dresses. Well, I love dresses in general. I actually think I have a problem.

Hello my name is Lara and I buy a lot of dresses (Ok, now all reply "Hello Lara!")

I particularly buy dresses that are vintage. I think this is mainly because they are not super short. We all know how I feel about too-short skirts and dresses. Just not my thing. Plus, vintage dresses are pretty unique. The chances of running into someone wearing the same dress is pretty slim to none.

But, I do like to buy dresses that are new as well. This is a Zac Posen for Target dress. I really loved the color and the neckline. Plus it has these huge pockets on the skirt which I find very usable. I am one of those crazy people who will garden in a dress with slicker boots on...so these pockets will come in handy.

Tacos at Big Star

There is a place in Chicago that gets so busy in the middle of the day that you have to wait over 2 hours for a table. No, it isn't some snooty 5 star restaurant or the newest locale to try the next new fusion flavors. No no. It is Big Star. A taco joint that sells $8 pitchers of Schlitz beer and $4 tacos in Wicker Park. But in all honesty, it is the best taco I have ever had...at any price. Located in the renovated Pontiac Grill (which was renovated from a car garage and was uber dive...), Big Star seats most of patrons outside in bright yellow, metal chairs. Yes, there is a long wait and you can't really have parties of more than 4 (unless you are OK with pushing tables together) and yes, its cash only but, it is completely worth it.

We knew it would be hard to get a table on a Sunday afternoon so we went in an off time (3pm to be exact) and we still had to wait at the bar for 20 mins. It was totally worth it. It was a beautiful day and I knew I would be sitting outside for I wore the new sun-dress I bought at Target on sale. It was a perfect lazy Sunday...

Things I Have Never Done Before - Harem Pants

I have a lot of friends who are from the Middle East. It is sort of just one of the results of going to university in Chicago. One of my best friends, Derya, is capable of styling just about anything and making it look fantastically chic. She's tall, thin, beautiful and Turkish; apparently in Instanbul, such fashions as Harem pants are common. I have seen her wear them many times and have always thought, "I would love to wear Harem pants and be able to pull them off with out looking stupid."

Ok, so these are NOT traditional Harem pants. They are the modernized version from Charlottle Russe but, I still feel like they are a fashion risk for me. I am not sure why I consider them risky. Maybe because I don't feel as fashionably chic as my friend Derya. I think these should have been styled with heels; maybe strappy sandals. What do you all think?

I have to admit that this is one of my favorite shirts recently. I think it is because I just adore the pattern. It is so lively and it is turquoise (my favorite color). I also like it because it is modest. I know I have mentioned before about how I don't really wear anything too revealing. Its not a religious thing or anything like that. I just don't feel it necessary to show the whole world too much skin. I have to say that it is sad sometimes when i find really cute skirts or dresses only to try them on and see most of my thighs. Its just not something I am into.

That aside, tomorrow I am continuing my series on things I would never wear (and no, it won't contradict the above).

Things I Have Never Done Before - One Day Dirty Hair

So I decided to start a small series of posts on things I have never done before. Most of them are fashion-oriented so they make sense. I came up with the idea after reading a post on Second Skin about not washing one's hair and using a dry shampoo in replacement. Since I am constantly urged to wash my hair only every other day by the salon buyer at work, I thought I would finally give it a try. I thought, if I can do this, maybe there are other fashions and trends that I am too stubborn to try that can work out too. So, hence the post series idea.

So, my one day dirty hair was done on Saturday. I have in the past not washed my hair for a day but I have to be honest that it is typically because I am cleaning or sick. I have never actually done it purposely and styled it that way. To ease the idea, I bought dry shampoo. I asked around at work to find out the best one and I was told to use Oscar Blandi's Pronto Invisible Volumizing Dry Shampoo. I was actually really amazed with it. I think the only thing I didn't like was the smell which reminded me oddly of Lemonheads. Not so bad considering it managed to work wonders on my dirty, oily hair.

And yes, that is one of the dresses Meaghan sent me!

Recently, I wrote Meaghan from left hand endeavor and asked her if she wanted to swap care packages. I was so excited when she too thought it was a great idea! I have followed her blog for nearly a year now and to be honest, her blog was not only one of the first blogs I followed but also one that got me into blogging on fashion in the first place. So needless to say, I was pretty psyched about getting post from her! And boy, was I floored at the great package she sent!

The care package of course made my week. It was sort of funny because I have been so incredibly busy that I actually forgot Meaghan was sending me something. The package happened to arrive the same day as a book order I had made from Amazon. I was far more excited about this than my silly books! My week since then has been pretty low key. Work just sort of lulled on and frankly, I am glad it is the weekend even if that means I am sitting at home doing nothing (it is supposed to rain all weekend).

Typical Friday outfit. I found this necklace a couple of weeks ago when I was organizing all of my jewelry for my jewelry tree. Its just cheapy plastic necklace from Target but something about it is just fun. It is really like nothing else I own and I think that I why i like it so much.

This weekend, my older brother made an unannounced visit into town from Boise! I was so excited. I have not seen my brother since my wedding in October. He rarely can make it in due to work and the expense of traveling. Luckily, he found a crazy deal on a direct flight and we got to see him for a few days.

Amazingly, one of his hobbies is restoring and fixing vintage watches (he apparently has a YouTube channel about it but I have to ask him the URL). Anyways, he grabbed some of his recent fixes to bring to us so we can pick out ones we liked. I knew he had found this beautiful gold pendant watch for me and fixed it up but I also fell in love with the silver men's watch! Everyone thought I was crazy for wanting to wear a men's watch!

I wore the pendant watch at work today. I feel like work has generally consumed my life lately. Well, work and ballet. But ballet is fun so I don't count it. Lately, I just feel uninspired about fashion. I have been more into jewelry. Maybe it is due to the season change. Its not quite warm out and not super cold either. Its just in between.

So, it has been pretty warm here in Chicagoland and I FINALLY got to wear the lavender dress I bought from Home Run Ballerina's Etsy Shop a few months ago. I love it but it is pretty sheer so you can really only wear it in the summer. I got so many compliments on it at work too. I love when I have a thrifted or vintage piece and everyone compliments it. I think it is even more satisfying to know you paid next to nothing for it and no one else has it.

Now, I know I have posted many, MANY times about my crazy obsession with jewelry. I could never really figure out how to prove this obsession until this weekend when parousing Pier 1, I found the most amazing jewelry tree! I mean this thing was perfect! It was huge (a meter tall), it had a bird and it looked vintage. Perfect! Granted, not ALL of my jewelry fits on it. In fact, my wood lock jewelry box is still packed full but at least it is packed full with all the expensive jewelry. The tree is purely for all of my fun jewelry! So I thought that I would share!

The box in front was my grandfather's from France and is full of all my earrings.

The jewelry box to the left contains all of my more expensive jewelry. Yes, that is all perfume. My engagement photo, my grandmother's old mirror and in front of it (though you can't see it) is my great-grandmother's old powder compact.

Some of you are probably wondering where I have been. And to be honest, I have been here just completely preoccupied. Work has been very busy for me and I have become obsessed. Obsessed with Ancestry.com. I am not sure if anyone has ever tried it but, it is addicting! I have found out so much about my family. Here I though we all have been here only for a few generations but it seems I was wrong. Parts of my family came through Jamestown in 1600s from England where I have been able to trace them back all the way through the middle ages to 630 AD in France/Germany. I never would have thought that.

The Hideout

I promise beyond all my being that I am not out to ignore my blog. I know, one wouldn't think this considering I haven't posted in nearly a week but, I honestly have just been busy.

Yesterday, I fully intended on posting some spring outfit photos I had planned but, last minute, my good friend Andrea texted me the following: "What are you up to, grl? Wanna go to a dance party???"

...I mean really, how can you ignore that text.

So, in good friendship, I chucked out to Chicago to meet my friend and to, in fact, go dancing at none other than The Hideout.

Located literally in the middle of an industrial area during the day, The Hideout is located in an old, tiny building hidden (hence the name) behind a cosmetic chemical laboratory and next to a seafood distributor. And is possibly the diveiest (is that a word?) bar I know of (and therefore love). However, if you strike luck on a Saturday, it is Dance Party night where the best disco, 70s and 80s dance tunes are played and all around dance. Not just dance, but dance not caring how incredibly silly you look. Of course we joined.

So, I suggest if ever in Chicago, visit The Hideout!

To be inspired...

I have to admit that I am often taken back by the many mundane and unrelated things that inspire my everyday fashion. Birds chirping in the morning can inspire me to wear a bird necklace as a statement, gloomy skies can help me pick out shades of grey layers, and watching a TV program about the oceans can inspire me to wear shell jewelry and linen sun dresses. But there is nothing more constant in my inspiration than dance. I get really, extremely excited when I find pictures in fashion magazines or online of models in ballet-inspired outfits or, heck, even in ballet shoes!

I have to admit. I often get a tad bit jaded when it comes to makeup because I work with it. I think I probably own more dollars in beauty products than my car (and my husband's car) is worth. It has sort of always been my vice. Some women collect handbags; some shoes. Me? I collect makeup. As a result, most of my makeup is pretty high end. In past I used to follow makeup trends pretty keenly. As I have grown older, my beauty product buys have turned into what works and what fits whatever need I have. Don't get me wrong, I still buy way too much makeup but at least it is generally targeted.

I have run aside from the point of my post...

Most recently I was pa-rousing the aisles of one of our stores when BAM! I was stopped by the pretty pattern on this compact (it is sort of like shiny object syndrome). Physician's Formula Bamboo Wear Refillable Compact...

I have a soft spot for anything natural, vegan, sustainable, etc etc so THIS fit right in! I have been using it for about 2 weeks now and amazingly, it is that best powder I have ever used and I have used it all. Trust me. The compact is refillable and the powder refills are...MADE WITH BAMBOO SILK!

I just thought I would share. I get a lot of questions about what products I like since I see so many fly past my desk at work (not because I am a product junkie, of course...).

Today was fairly tiring. I think the time change had an affect on me. I don't typically feel it but, for some reason this year I did. However, I did manage to get out of bed on time, work out, and look somewhat decent! (and the hair was a big hit at work!)

New Hair and a Giveaway

So, I have been super busy and I completely apologize for not posting regularly. My job sent me on a brief trip to NYC this week and I have been struggling to catch up ever since.

However, today I got a haircut. It is pretty edgy for me. I haven't had an edgy haircut since I was probably in highschool. I have a tendancy to be pretty extreme with my haircuts (that is when I do get my hair cut). When I was 17, I went from having long hair that ended somewhere in the middle of back to a pixie cut with long front bangs. When I was 20, I dyed my hair pitch black and parted it down the middle ala Jap-anime character-style. Most recently, I chopped off my hair into fringe...myself. So I suppose cutting my hair into the below style isn't that out of character.

I apologize for my horrible blogging ability lately. The world has just gotten so busy. I sound like a broken record, I know. However, I seem to have found time to shop because I have bought so many wonderful pieces over the last few days. Including this beautiful navy and ivory scalloped skirt from Anthropologie. Usually I just walk into that store and try everything on but, never buy anything because it is too expensive. But this skirt was amazingly 40% off! I was so excited I wore it the next day to work!

Because the outfit was so dark, I went with classic makeup: neutral eyes, red lips. The red lipstick is more of a berry but., it went well with the floral top without looking too spring (it is still 35 degrees here in Chicago).

Today was slightly different. I spent the day with my best friend at the IKC Dog Show in Chicago. Now, disclaimer: I don't like dogs. I am a cat person. BUT some of these dogs we just adorable! My favorite was this little guy!

The Deep Depths

Today I got home from work and just looked horrible. For the last few days I haven't been feeling very well, clearly fighting off a cold. So instead of attempting to take pictures of the pathetic outfit I wore to work, I started digging through my closet. As a result I came across a skirt I have had for nearly 10 years. I bought it a long time ago when I first became a manager at the local movie theater. It was probably the first classic black skirt I ever owned at full retail. In those days, it barely fit my tiny frame and laid pretty low on my hips but now, it fits much better! (Can you believe I am actually complimenting my curves?)
